15. Ariel
- I know this one might be a bit controversial, considering a lot of people would say she is one of their favorites. I’m sorry to break it to you, but Ariel is a train wreck. Not only is she just a dumb, rebellious teenager, but she actively makes horrible decisions that have negative impacts on everyone around her. Consider this: you see a (semi attractive) man dancing on the deck of a ship. Would your first train of thought be ‘I’m gonna change everything in my life, leave behind everything and everyone I know, make a deal with the evilest witch in the sea that is known for screwing people over, just to hangout with a guy that has no idea who I am!’? If that wasn’t your first train of thought, congratulations! You have at least some common sense! Not to mention everything she puts poor Sebastian through. Sebastian is just trying to protect Ariel on the order of King Triton (Ariel’s father), but this reckless, chaotic mess of a princess really put Sebastian through the ringer. Ariel’s decision causes Sebastian to almost get cooked while trying to watch over her. In conclusion, Ariel is dumb and had no regard for how her actions would affect others.
- Best Song: Under the Sea
- Best Scene: Sebastian trying to escape the cook.
14. Snow White
- Again, I’m sorry to break it to you, but Snow White was dumb. She stumbles into a random house, which, by the way, is breaking and entering, and then just decides to take a nap when no one is home. Then, when she wakes up to seven dudes in the house, her first thought is ‘I wanna stay here and clean for them. Yeah, that will be a fulfilling life.’ Snow White, well aware that queen was trying to kill her and had already sent someone to try and kill her, takes an apple from a creepy stranger that comes and knocks on the door to offer it to her. Like really, do you have no common sense? Plus, Snow White fell in love with a dude she didn’t know, simply because he kissed her while she was unconscious. Like come on girl, have a little self respect.
- Best Song: Whistle While You Work
- Best Scene: Snow White singing with the forest animals.
13.Aurora
- Aurora really is a stereotypical, classic Disney Princess: naive, passive, malleable, and always waiting for her prince to save her. She is the classic damsel in distress story we have heard many times before from Disney. There is nothing special about Aurora, besides that fact she only has 18 lines of dialogue, not including her songs. It’s like even the writers knew she was boring and uninteresting. There’s not really anything else to say about her. She is boring and stereotypical, the end.
- Best Song: Bluebird / I Wonder
- Best Scene: Flora and Merryweather fighting over the color of the dress, aka the ‘make it blue’ ‘make it pink’ scene.
12. Cinderella
- Cinderella is a victim of unfortunate circumstance. She really didn’t deserve what happened to her. Her father’s death and the cruelty of her step mother, and the fact that she remained so sweet and kind despite all that, is the reason she is not farther down on the list. I admire her constant positive attitude, because lord knows it would be hard to stay positive after years of abuse. The thing that puts her farther down on the list is just how stereotypical she is, always kind and sweet, constantly waiting for someone else to come save her instead of trying to change her situation herself.
- Best Song: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes
- Best Scene: It’s a tie between the scene where Cinderella and all of her animal friends are making the original dress for the ball, and the scene where Cinderella is racing home after the clock strikes midnight and everything is transforming back to the way it was.
11. Anna
- Doesn’t the fact that she is completely overshadowed by her sister say everything I need to say? She has a big heart, which is good, but sometimes her eternal optimism can be quite a bit annoying. Like, Elsa clearly doesn’t want to build a snowman; why can’t you just leave her alone? She does get some points for straying from the Disney princess stereotype, as she is more free-spirited, speaks her mind and is awkward in a lovable way, but at certain points the writers try way too hard to make her a quirky and awkward princess, and it gets hard to watch. Let’s not forget the whole Hans debacle, either. Anna fell in love with a this dude and wanted to marry him after knowing him for a couple of hours, like really? What is it with these princesses and having no self respect?
- Best Song: Love is an Open Door
- Best Scene: Anna sacrificing herself to save Elsa, the act of true love she needed to break the curse.
10. Rapunzel
- Personally, I don’t really have anything against Rapunzel. Again, she is a victim of unfortunate circumstance, but unlike Cinderella, she does go against her overbearing mother figure to pursue her dreams. She’s kind, adventurous, and actually does something about changing her life. She is feisty and can take care of herself, but she can also be too reckless for her own good. I honestly like Rapunzel, and I’m sure you’re thinking ‘How can she say she likes Rapunzel when she ranked her tenth,’ but being the best Disney princess is a tough competition, and there is nothing about her that stands out enough to make me put her higher on the list.
- Best Song: I See The Light
- Best Scene: When Flynn cuts Rapunzel’s hair in order to free her from Mother Gothel even though it means he will die.
9. Belle
- One of the reasons I love Belle is because despite the fact that all the close minded people in her town look down her because of her pursuit of knowledge, she continues to try and learn as much as she can all while dreaming of an adventure. Belle refuses to be mistreated, demeaned, or controlled by anyone else. Belle sacrifices herself in order to save her father without a second thought, showing that she is selfless and kind hearted when it comes to the people she cares about. I have a lot of respect for her because her main aspiration was not to find a man, but to seek adventure. She’s definitely far from perfect though, as she had a few downfalls. Her main one being, sister had a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome. She just completely forgets that The Beast is low-key a psycho with a raging temper that wants to keep her locked in his palace forever. Let’s not that forget during her first night at the castle when she refuses to go to dinner with The Beast, which is completely justified considering he is holding her captive in his castle, he orders her to starve to death. All and all I really like her, but her case of Stockholm Syndrome seriously makes me question her decision making skills.
- Best Song: Be Our Guest & Belle
- Best Scene: When Gaston and The Beast are fighting and Belle says, “He’s no monster, Gaston, you are!”
8. Pocahontas
- I know almost everyone loves Pocahontas. She’s just so free-spirited, and honestly she’s an icon, but as much as I love her, the girl had some faults. She cares more about this stranger she has known for a few days than for her own tribe. I do have some major respect for her refusing the arranged marriage her father set up for her. She wanted to be able to choose her own path, which is completely understandable. Not to mention she can speak to the spirits and understand animals, which is super cool. Also, I’m not even gonna mention her in the sequel – I like to pretend that Pocahontas 2 does not exist because it’s so bad. Even though I don’t like the fact she tries to sacrifice herself for John Smith after knowing him for only a few days, she is an iconic badass that I love and appreciate.
- Best Song: Colors of the Wind
- Best Scene: Anytime Grandmother Willow is on screen.
7. Nala
- I know most of you are confused because Nala isn’t typically considered a Disney princess, but I consider her a Disney princess and that’s all that matters. When she is a cub, she is best friends with Simba, and even though he is her prince, she is completely unafraid to give him sass and put him in his place when he needs it. She is clever and strong, and refuses to let Simba take credit for her ideas and doesn’t want to be overlooked. Once she grows up and sees what’s happened to her pride’s land since Simba has disappeared, she knows she has to do something. When she talks to Simba, she spits nothing but facts and tells Simba to suck it up and come back and save his land. She is strong and clever, and doesn’t take shit from anyone.
- Best Song: I Just Can’t Wait To Be King
- Best Scene: The entire Can You Feel the Love Tonight montage.
6. Jasmine
- Jasmine is honestly an icon. She refused to be treated like an object and was completely unafraid to voice her opinions. She didn’t want to be stuck in some arranged marriage; she wanted to be with someone she loved. Not only is she unafraid to speak her mind, she is also compassionate towards her people, and stands up for their safety. However, she definitely has her faults; she is very stubborn and opinionated, and is definitely the type of girl who has always gotten her way, so when she doesn’t get it, she freaks out.
- Best Song: Prince Ali
- Best Scene: Jasmine expertly manipulating Jafar so that Aladdin could sneak into the palace
5. Tianna
- Tianna is strong, independent, and career driven. She works hard as a waitress and dreams of opening her own business. She is a strong woman that doesn’t need anyone to do anything for her. She values hard work and wants to earn everything she has, unlike other princess that don’t want to do work and just expect to have everything they want. *cough cough* Ariel *cough cough*. But anyway, back to Tiana. Tiana is the only princess that has an actual job. Sis is out here getting that coin. She saves Prince Naveen multiple times. Really, she’s the only reason he’s still alive at the end of the film.
- Best Song: Almost There
- Best Scene: Tiana realizing that while her father never got what he wanted: He had love, which was much more important than what he wanted.
4. Kida
- Kida is probably the most underrated Disney princess. She deserves better than being constantly ignored; so here she is, near the top of my list, so she will finally get some recognition. She isn’t another damsel in distress, she is a warrior that fights for her people. She could kick almost anyone’s ass in combat. At a young age, she has to see her own mother die to protect their home when Atlantis starts to sink. She wants to help her people, and protect their way of life. She is willing to sacrifice anything for her people, and she does exactly that when she bonds with The Heart of Atlantis, the power crystal that protects Atlantis from being destroyed, and is encased in a crystal tomb. She is strong, powerful, and an incredible leader. I’m sure about 80% of you have never heard of Kida and probably don’t even know what movie she is from, so I want you all to go home and watch Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Y’all need to educate yourself and better your life.
- Best Song: Unlike every other disney movie, this one isn’t a musical.
- Best Scene: When Kida, still being possessed by The Heart of Atlantis, awakens the giant stone guardians of Atlantis and they create a force field around Atlantis to protect it from the erupting volcano.
3. Moana
- Moana is a new gen Disney princess that received a lot of positive feedback for a very good reason. Moana is fearless and strong leader. She sets sail across the open ocean in order to restore the heart of Te Fiti, which is prohibited, and successfully tricks the demigod Maui into helping her. If you don’t think she is cool, just remember the ocean chose her. The ocean, the thing that covers 70% of our planet, picked this island princess to restore the heart of Te Fiti, and willingly does what she tells it to. Also, she tames a giant lava monster with just her voice, like talk about iconic behavior. All and all Moana is a strong leader who did what had to be done to protect her people; not to mention a sister snapped with this soundtrack; she really did give us nonstop bangers.
- Best Song: How Far I’ll Go
- Best Scene: Moana taming Te Ka with a song, and being the icon she is, restores the heart of Te Fiti
2. Merida
- Merida is a feminist icon. When her parents, especially her mother, try to force her into a marriage, she finds it ridiculous that she needs a man by her side to rule. She wants to take control of her own destiny and be the decider of her own fate. She is headstrong and independent; plus she is the best archer in her kingdom. Speaking of which, let’s not forget the Merida pulled up during the competition for her hand and schooled all of her possible suitors by kicking their asses in archery. Yes, her turning her mother into a bear probably was not her best idea, but in her defense, that was not what she intended to to do. Merida admits she was wrong and apologizes to her mom, healing their relationship, and showing incredible personal growth.
- Best Song: Learn Me Right
- Best Scene: “If ya had the chance to change your fate, would ya?”
1. Mulan
- Where do I even begin with Mulan? She is the best Disney princes by far. Her number one priority is protecting her family. She doesn’t do anything just for personal gain; she does everything to protect the people around her. She tries so hard to impress the Matchmaker, but after she gets thrown out, she feels she has disappointed her family. When her father gets drafted into the emperor’s army, she knows he will not survive, so in order to protect him, she takes his place. She has a rough start in the training camp, but she manages to not only hold her own, but also be the first soldier to reach the top of the pole. Mulan is an icon. She saved the entirety of China; none of your faves can compete with that. She is a strong woman who took out most of the Huns army, and the leader of the Huns himself. She is the best Disney princess for many reasons. All she wants to do is protect her family, and she doesn’t have any selfish intentions. She is incredibly strong, both in physical combat and in using her mind for strategy; I’m pretty sure she can kick the ass of all the other Disney princesses. She strives to bring honor to the family while still staying true to who she is, and she manages to do that all while SAVING THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OF CHINA. All and all, Mulan is the best Disney princess, and if you disagree, feel free to contact me, so we can make a plan to throw hands.
- Best Song: A three way tie between, Reflection, A Girl Worth Fighting For, and I’ll Make a Man Out Of You. But let’s be real, this entire soundtrack slaps.
- Best Scene: It’s basically impossible for me to pick a favorite scene from this movie cause this entire movie is a work of art. If I had to choose, it would be when Mulan finally reaches the top of the pole during I’ll Make A Man Out Of You, and basks in the glory of being the first soldier to reach the top.
