Senior Spotlight: Isaiah Wells

Isaiah Wells is a senior at Mendocino\u2019s Community High School, whose most recognizable attributes are his striking hair and incredible love of games. When he isn\u2019t focused on other things, Isaiah enjoys playing Magic: The Gathering and team based video games. Our interview took place in Derek\u2019s room in the community school, \u201cwhere he spends a majority of his time,\u201d commented James Eastman, one of the community school teachers.

Throughout his four years of high school, Isaiah\u2019s favourite subject is History \u201cwith Derek, of course.\u201d His least favourite class was World Today with Andy due to past experiences during his freshman year. Isaiah Wells\u2019 ideal teacher is \u201ca teacher who is willing to work with you if you don\u2019t understand, one-on-one\u201d; he did not cite any specific teacher for this question.

Isaiah\u2019s hardest challenges have been \u201cgraduating,\u201d (Misael Triplett chimed in with a quick \u201cFinding Nemo?\u201d during Isaiah\u2019s pause here, to which we all chuckled) \u201cand finding the motivation to do anything related to school.\u201d Unfortunately, school has not taught him any important life lessons thus far, but we have hope. However, Isaiah did have some decently helpful advice for the younger generations after he chastised me for losing his original interview from December: \u201cknow how long you can procrastinate for\u2026 be aware of how much time you have to waste, and you don\u2019t have to go to college.\u201d

Wells attends Mendocino Community High School and has since his freshman year. When asked why he chose this school, he started slowly, \u201cI wanted to go to this school because\u2026 why did I wanna go to this school?… I wasn\u2019t friends with anyone when I came here. [It] was because I actually didn\u2019t want to be around my class, to be completely honest. I was like, \u2018well these people kind of suck\u2019 so.\u201d After high school, Isaiah Wells plans to go to the US Navy for six years, \u201cfor two years of schooling and four years active duty. I\u2019m not going to college, more schooling sounds awful.\u201d

With our interview drawing to a close, I prompted him the more serious question of if a penguin walked through Derek\u2019s door right now, what would he say and why is he here? His answer: \u201cThe penguin is migrating south, don\u2019t ask me why. Oh, south to get tacos, that\u2019s why it has a sombrero.\u201d I then asked him how many pennies would fit into Derek\u2019s room, and he confidently mumbled, \u201cprobably like a billion. Probably\u2026\u201d
