Senior Spotlight: Sophie Barrett
Sophie Barrett is a senior at Mendocino Community High School. She is a fantastic artist, and is most likely known for how sassy she is with her friends and teachers. We had our interview in the art room, where she was working on one of her most recent pieces.
In her free time, Sophie Barrett likes creating art and hanging out with her friends.
Her favourite subject has been art, specifically AP 2D and regular 2D, and science has been her least favourite subject. She stated that it was probably an issue with the teachers rather than a distaste for science that made her enjoy it less. Her most challenging class has been biology with Tyler Grinberg, as well as Pre-Calculus with Mr Sos.
Additionally, her ideal teacher has experience, is encouraging, empathetic, and knows when to stop persisting and allow a student to be independent (a lot like Sos). In regard to younger classmen, she said, “don’t take it (school) for granted”. Overall, she says that these last four years have taught her a lot of social lessons.
Sophie is a Community Schooler, and she chose to take this path in her sophomore year of high school. “A sophomore realization,” is what she referred to it as. She wanted to go there for the atmosphere and to not be average. Plus she believed it would help with going abroad. As for colleges, she would like to go to Rhode Island School of Design, The Chicago Art Institute, or really anywhere out of the state or even the country.
To conclude the interview in the art room, she was asked how many pennies would fit in the room. “A billion-million pennies,” Sophie answered with a smile. And when asked what a penguin would say if he entered the room right then, she said, “It’s speaking spanish, with a sombrero, and he’s here because it’s the best room in the school.”
