Fear of Perception
The topic of my story is how others’ attention in school goes towards how peers perceive them. Students often spend their attention on how they are perceived by others at school, rather than just learning. They worry about their appearance, popularity, feeling judged about what they say or do, and are just constantly aware of what they look like in the eyes of their classmates. This can cause much anxiety and stress for them, and disrupt their learning by making it harder to focus in class and participate in discussions.
This issue matters because when students become more focused on how they are perceived it takes away from their learning. School is supposed to be a place where students can feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. If they are scared of constantly being or feeling judged this can limit their learning, and restrain them from making those mistakes and getting past them. Student life right now is not only focused on their schoolwork but also thinking about the expectations of their appearance and their behavior. This reveals that students are dealing with high levels of stress and distraction on the day to day.
I interviewed two of my classmates on this subject, and asked them questions about how this can affect their learning in class. Kaiya was the first person I interviewed and I asked her these questions. “How much time a day do you spend thinking about how others perceive you? Is this a source of anxiety for you? Do you feel like you spend too much time thinking about this? Have you thought about ways you can limit this thought? Can you talk about a time where concern about others’ opinions shaped your choices?” Kaiya’s responses show that she is not as focused on how others perceive her that much, but when she fears she does something that people might judge she feels self conscious. I also interviewed Athena, and her responses were much different. Athena constantly thinks about how she acts and talks and how people could judge her for what she does. This causes a lot of anxiety for her, which makes her time in class harder than it should be.
Students can experience this fear at different levels and in different ways. Throughout Kaiya’s interview I learned that even students that don’t constantly think about the judgement from others can still feel self conscious in moments. Throughout Athena’s I learned that people that have regular fear about the perception of others can experience loads of anxiety that affect her learning. This shows that school is not all about learning but is also heavily a social environment which can cause this fear to appear or worsen.
